Two full time Hospitality students have secured Apprenticeships through their studies in the non-apprentice training group at Morwell campus.

Under the tutelage of Morwell Hospitality Trainer, Anthony Patterson, students Alex Hall and Robert Hudson joined the Certificate III in Commercial Cookery full time course funded by Free TAFE, back in February 2020 with the goal of gaining an apprenticeship in mind.

“Throughout their dedicated studies both Alex and Rob showed great promise while developing skills and knowledge in the field of commercial cookery,” Anthony recalled.

“I became aware of a couple apprenticeship opportunities from local business owners who were looking for potential workers to turn into apprentice chefs.”

Alex and Robert applied for two of these opportunities and, through the confidence and skills they gained while studying at TAFE Gippsland, were fortunate enough to gain full time apprenticeships.

Anthony said the students plan to leave the full time FREE TAFE course and look forward to continue studying into 2021 as apprentices with TAFE Gippsland.

“I am extremely proud as their cookery trainer to have had the opportunity to train these two exceptional students through the FREE TAFE initiative at TAFE Gippsland,” Anthony said.

“Also, supporting local business owners and helping them find talented apprentices is always a grateful experience.”

The students were glowing in their appreciation of the opportunity TAFE Gippsland provided to them through vocational study. Rob Hudson has been working with Duarts Homestead in Maffra for two months now.

“Studying commercial cookery at TAFE Gippsland has not only afforded me an exceptional opportunity to learn from exemplary trainers in a sound environment, it has also forged a brand new direction in my career,” Rob said.

“In less than six months, I managed to gain meaningful employment as an apprentice chef and I couldn’t be happier.”

Alex Hall is equally as excited about her new role at Missen Link Burgers in Traralgon.

“Despite coming into this course with little confidence in my abilities, my trainer Anthony and the team at TAFE Gippsland have created a diverse and safe place, in which they lead with open minds,” Alex said.

“It is opening doors and creating opportunities for success.”
