Course Overview

Learn the fundamentals of working in the automotive industry by studying your Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preparation. This fast-paced and exciting qualification will give you the necessary skills to perform a range of technical tasks on cars, heavy vehicles, outdoor power equipment, boats, motorcycles, and more.

You’ll learn how to service and repair minor faults in engines, transmissions, suspensions, steering, brakes and electrical components. This course is a fantastic jumping off point for people who are curious about working in the automotive industry, and it can help you find the right apprenticeship to match your career goals.

Successfully completing your Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preparation will give you the base knowledge to work in the broader industry as a trade’s assistant, vehicle service assistant, automotive trainee, and a range of other entry-level positions.


8:00am to 4:30pm Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays plus recommended 1 day each week work placement in the Automotive industry.

Qualifications and Recognition

Upon successful completion of this course students will be eligible to receive the Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preparation.

Career Opportunities

Assist with gaining employment as an apprentice in automotive workshops and or dealerships as an automotive technician.

Opportunities for Further Study

The AUR20716 Pre Vocational qualification can lead to the use of units in the AUR Training Packages includes higher level qualifications which including Cert III, IV and Diplomas.

Entry Requirements

Mandatory entry requirements

  • 17 years of age with a sufficient completion of a language literacy and numeracy assessment
  • The students are required to have the physical ability to undertake the practical tasks required to complete the Automotive Pre Vocational course.

Recommended entry requirements

  • Completion of year ten secondary studies,
  • Work placement (to be arranged by student)

Limitations to entry

  • Insufficient completion of a language literacy and numeracy assessment.
  • Inability to carryout the physical requirements related to the Automotive Pre Vocational course

The Placement is only required if the applicant requires this course to be deemed as a full time course made up of 4days attendance a week. In this case there would be a Maximum of 220 hours work cover covered by TAFE Gippsland or for the duration that the attendee is in attendance of the course which ever is the less.
