Certificate III in Carpentry (Apprenticeship)

This four-year, hands-on course is designed so you work and study at the same time, gaining real-world experience and mentoring to give yourself the best chance of future employment.
As an apprentice, you’ll enter this course via your employment and undertake four years of training, working with an employer to gain this qualification where you’ll learn to work with a huge range of tools, equipment and materials, creating the formwork for the world around us.

You’ll learn to work confidently on your own as you master your ability to construct, install, repair and finish residential, commercial and industrial spaces.
What’s even better is that once you finish this course, you’ll be qualified to work in the industry right away. If you do want to take your study further though, you’ll be eligible to study a Certificate IV in Building and Construction. This course will add to your existing skillset, giving you more expertise and increasing your employment opportunities.

Certificate III in Carpentry will provide you with the qualification as a Carpenter or a Carpenter/Joiner with the opportunity to advance to becoming a Builder by completing extra study for example, the builders registration and licensing course.

Builders Licence can be obtained by completing CPC40210 Certificate IV In Building and Construction or CPC50210 Diploma of Building and Construction.

CPC30220 Certificate III in Carpentry offers the following skills and knowledge:
Communication with clients, colleagues and others using clear and direct forms of communication whilst actively listening and identifying and confirming requirements for the task or job to be carried out. Obtaining and understanding all relevant trade and technical terms, symbols, abbreviations and language, working as part of a team, providing assistance and encouragement to other team members, utilising the specialist skills that are part of the team and using these strengths to the best of their abilities. Ensures that equipment is checked regularly and up to date meeting site and job requirements and where applicable any hazards are reported and documented. Carpentry skills for becoming a qualified carpenter including hand tools, power tools, timber and steel frames and trusses, and all external cladding as well as internal linings and fixings.

Mandatory entry requirements:

Must be 15 years of age or older for a School Based Apprenticeship.
If students are no longer at secondary school and are under 17 years of age they must have a "school leaving certificate" from the Department of Education before they can enrol in this qualification.
To be enrolled into Certificate III in Carpentry each student must have a current employer at the time of enrolment due to this course being for apprentices only.
Each apprentice will also be signed by an Apprenticeship Centre of choosing by the employer and have a training contract that states the relationship between the employer, apprentice and RTO. Once the training contract has been released a Apprentice Sign up and Induction is completed within 5 working days and the apprentice commences in class once enrolment has been confirmed.

Recommended entry Requirements:

Completion of the general construction induction training program, specified in the Safe
Work Australia model Code of Practice: Construction Work, is required by anyone carrying
out construction work. Achievement of CPCCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the
construction industry meets this requirement

Limitations to course Entry:

For each Learner enrolling in a vocational qualification, regardless of eligible or ineligible status under the Victorian Training Guarantee, TAFE Gippsland will conduct a Pre-Training Review of current competencies (including literacy and numeracy skills) prior to commencement in training.
