CHC33015 Certificate III in Individual Support

Mandatory entry requirements

  • Applicants under the age of 18 are encouraged to apply for upcoming intakes, however you must be 18 years of age at course commencement or have turned 18 years of age by 30 April, 2023.
  • Provide Police Check in each year of placement (without disclosures)
  • Provide Working with Children’s Check (without disclosures)
  • Flu vaccination in current year of placement
  • COVID vaccination - triple dose (From 17 September 2021, COVID-19 vaccination will be mandatory for all residential aged care workers. Exemptions will not apply)
  • # NDIS worker screening check (required for the Disability stream of this course)
  • Must be able to attend class 2-3 days per week as per the timetable
  • Complete 120 hours placement as arranged by TAFE Gippsland unless under a traineeship model
  • Prospective student to complete online application form
  • Minimum ACSF level 3 in all levels

Recommended entry requirements

  • Moderate computer skills
  • Licence to travel to placement
  • The ability to stand with only short breaks for the duration of 8 hour period.
  • The ability to walk for extended periods as required for a clinical placement shift,
  • Maintain concentration levels in order to complete practical tasks and care at the high level required including for multiple residents per shift.
  • Complete multiple physical and mental tasks over the period of a shift with the stamina to provide safe care.
  • The ability to lift safety at least 20kg of weight.
  • Stable physical mobility in order to transfer and aid a client with walking.
  • The ability to assist clients /consumers to move from lying to sitting or to standing all while completing some weight bearing activities.

Limitations to entry

  • Must be physically fit as the job role requires manual handling using industry equipment and 8 hour shifts on placement where the role involves physical work and long periods of standing. Refer to inherent requirements for this course

Inherent Requirements

Inherent Requirements are the components of a course or unit that demonstrates a student’s ability, knowledge and skills in order to achieve the stated learning outcomes of the course or unit. In order for students to be deemed competent within a course or unit Inherent Requirements must be met by all students.

Where students may require reasonable adjustments to a course or unit as a result of disability or other impacts on study these actions must not undermine the academic integrity of the course, unit or learning outcome. Prospective students of the Certificate III Individual Support are required to review the following Inherent Requirements prior to proceeding with enrolment to ensure you are aware of any difficulties you may have to meet these requirements.

Physical Stamina

Student has the ability to stand for long periods of time, complete shifts of physical work 8 hours physically manage a full time class load (4 days per week) and have the physical stamina to complete 120 hours of placement.

What is expected of student:

  • The ability to stand with only short breaks for the duration of 8 hour period.
  • The ability to walk for extended periods as required for a clinical placement shift,
  • Maintain concentration levels in order to complete practical tasks and care at the high level required including for multiple residents per shift.
  • Complete multiple physical and mental tasks over the period of a shift with the stamina to provide safe care.

Strength and mobility

Student must be able to perform gross motor skills such as lifting, carrying, pushing, standing, twisting and bending. While manual handling and equipment is available, Aged Care requires the ability to perform physical tasks safely to protect individuals, other staff and patients.

What is expected of student:

  • The ability to lift safety at least 20kg of weight.
  • Stable physical mobility in order to transfer and aid a patient with walking.
  • The ability to assist patients to move from lying to sitting or to standing all while completing some weight bearing activities.

Fine motor skills

  • The ability to undertake precise hand movements such pinching, grasping, manipulating syringes and needles.
  • Assist residents to dress including specialist clothing such as stocking, braces and slings.
  • Attending to personal care requirements toileting and washing

Work within multiple health care environments

Students are required to demonstrate the ability to work across multiple settings.

What is expected of student:

Students who as result of a medical condition, disability or personal choice are unable to or choose not to have the above immunisations must advise on entry.

Behaviour

Student must demonstrate knowledge of and ability to adhere to the ethical behaviour requirements in all course environments (pre enrolment, classroom based activities, practical labs and clinical placement).

What is expected of student:

  • Demonstrate the ability to maintain confidentiality of information in the practical setting.
  • Ability to take responsibility for behaviour.
  • Act in a professional manner at all times such as behaving with responsibility and following safety guidelines to reduce risk.

All students must comply with codes, guidelines and policies regarding appropriate behaviour in the sector and TAFE Gippsland. This ensures physical, psychological, emotional and wellbeing of individual and those in care is not at risk.

Metal Wellness

Due to the caring requirements, personal care practices and working with vulnerable people, students must be mentally well enough to demonstrate stable health and behaviour in the classroom and practical setting. Mental Wellness is the ability to recognise individual abilities and respond to normal stresses of life, study and work.

Student demonstrates the ability to moderate their own behaviour with behavioural stability in order to function in a diverse and challenging classroom and practical environment.

What is expected of student:

  • Responding appropriately to constructive feedback.
  • Managing own emotions and behaviour effectively when dealing with individuals in practical and classroom setting. Especially situation which may be challenging such as working with clients with conditions such as Dementia.
  • Manage multiple demands.
  • Remain focused and engaged during all practical tasks to ensure resident care.
  • Manage personal emotions and behaviour when working with fellow students, staff and patients.
  • Ability to act within a support role especially in situations of distress and end of life.

Communication (verbal / non-verbal)

Student has the ability to interact with fellow students, staff and aged care residents in a practical setting in English in order to provide safe delivery of care and fulfil course requirements.

What is expected of student:

  • The ability to understand and respond to verbal communication.
  • Verbally communicate clear instructions and explanations.
  • The ability to respond to verbal instructions or communicate in a timely manner

Communication (written)

Student is able to produce written materials required for the classroom and practical setting.

What is expected of student:

  • Clear, concise, accurate and time efficient writing including the ability to produce hand written notes.
  • Recording information using computer based systems (typing).
  • Writing reports and assessments for classroom based activities.
  • Digital literacy skills in order to navigate TAFE Gippsland online Learning Management System.
  • Regular access to Student hub in order to be up to date with course information including class changes.

Literacy

Student must demonstrate the required level of literacy in order to read, comprehend and retain course information and understand written instructions to perform tasks necessary to the practical environment.

What is expected of student:

  • The ability to read and understand information such as placement documents, individual support plans and safety procedures. This is essential to provide safe care and meeting legal and ethical responsibilities during placement.
  • Read and demonstrate an understanding of course materials such as class notes, text books.

Vision

Vision refers to the extent that an individual can see and interpret visual information. The wearing of glasses or contact lens that correct vision is not considered relevant to this inherent requirement.

Students are expected to have a level of vision that enables them to safely complete all practical and administrative tasks associated with Aged Care environment.

What is expected of student:

  • The ability to read handwritten and information in reduced size fonts.
  • Sufficient vision to assist and observe resident hygiene tasks.
