Inherent Requirements

Inherent Requirements are the components of a course or unit that demonstrates a student’s ability, knowledge and skills in order to achieve the stated learning outcomes of the course or unit.  In order for students to be deemed competent within a course or unit Inherent Requirements must be met by all students.

Where students may require reasonable adjustments to a course or unit as a result of disability or other impacts on study these actions must not undermine the academic integrity of the course, unit or learning outcome. Prospective students of the Diploma of Remedial Massage are required to review the following Inherent Requirements prior to proceeding with enrolment to ensure you are aware of any difficulties you may have to meet these requirements.

Physical Stamina

Student has the ability to stand for long periods of time, complete shifts of physical work (up to 8 hours), including the ability to complete 200 hours of practical components of the course within our campus setting.  During these extended periods of time student must have the Physical and Mental endurance to maintain focus and concentration to ensure safe practices at all times.

What is expected of student:

  • The ability to stand with only short breaks for the duration of an 8-hour period.
  • The ability to walk for extended periods as required for a clinical placement shift.
  • Maintain concentration levels in order to complete practical and repetitive tasks at the high level required including for multiple patients per shift.
  • Participate in practical classes including as a client in order to assist other students to practice and demonstrate skills.
  • Complete multiple physical and mental tasks over the period of a shift with the stamina to provide safe treatment.
  • Sufficient physical endurance to maintain consistency and quality of performance throughout the designated period of time (typically up to 4hrs).

Strength and mobility

Student must be able to perform gross motor skills such as lifting, carrying, pushing, standing, twisting and bending.

What is expected of student:

  • The ability to lift and hold safely 5kg of weight.
  • Lift and adjust equipment in excess of 10kg.
  • The ability to complete a range of passive testing including lifting client limbs (full weight).

Gross motor skills

  • The ability to twist and bend while completing practical tasks for extended periods of time.  While safe manual handling techniques are in place practical tasks will require weight bearing and repetitive movements of students placing pressure on major muscle groups such as back, shoulders, neck and arms with good body mechanics.
  • Manual handling ie safely physically assisting clients with varying physical capacities to move from lying or sitting to a standing position. -
  • Providing physical pressure through Remedial Massage treatment techniques.
  • Adopting postures to maximise mechanical advantage in delivering treatment and minimising the strain on your body.

Fine motor skills

  • The ability to undertake precise hand movements such grasping, pressing and turning.
  • Adequate hand strength in order to complete tasks.

Communication (verbal / non-verbal)

Student has the ability to interact with fellow students, staff and patients in a practical setting in English in order to provide safe delivery of treatment and fulfil course requirements.

What is expected of student:

  • The ability to understand and respond to verbal communication.
  • Verbally communicate clear instructions and explanations.
  • The ability to respond to verbal instructions or communicate in a timely manner.

Communication (written)

Student is able to produce written materials required for the classroom and practical setting.

What is expected of student:

  • Clear, concise, accurate and time efficient writing including the ability to produce hand written notes.
  • Recording information using computer based systems (typing).
  • Writing reports and assessments for classroom based activities and practical environments such as client assessment results and treatment plans.
  • Digital literacy skills in order to navigate TAFE Gippsland online Learning Management System.
  • Regular access to Student hub in order to be up to date with course information including class changes.

Behaviour

Student must demonstrate knowledge of and ability to adhere to the ethical behaviour requirements in all course environments (pre enrolment, classroom based activities, practical labs and placement).

What is expected of student:

  • Demonstrating the ability to maintain confidentiality of information in the practical setting.
  • Ability to take responsibility for behaviour and respond to feedback.
  • Work under time pressures while managing complex and multiple demands.
  • Remain alert and maintain focus whilst providing client care and/or treatment.
  • The ability to demonstrate a respectful approach to other students, clients and staff

Mental wellness

Mental Wellness is the ability to recognise individual abilities and respond to normal stresses of life, study and work.

Student demonstrates the ability to moderate their own behaviour with behavioural stability in order to function in a diverse and challenging academic and practical environment.

What is expected of student:

  • Responding appropriately to constructive feedback.
  • Managing own emotions and behaviour effectively when dealing with individuals in clinical and classroom setting.
  • Manage multiple, complex demands.
  • Remain focused and engaged during all clinical tasks to ensure patient care.
  • Manage personal emotions and behaviour when working with fellow students, staff and clients.
