About this course
According to the Australian Institute for Health and Welfare (AIHW), one in five people experience poor mental health and behavioural conditions, and it is rising. Millions of individuals have their lives impacted by spiking mental health issues.
This course will give you the fundamental knowledge of core topics such as:
• Trauma informed care.
• Provide recovery oriented mental health support.
• Establish self-directed recovery relationships.
• Assessing and promoting wellbeing.
• Facilitating self-advocacy.
• Working with other service providers.
• Promote Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural safety
• Work Health and Safety
• Working with diverse people
• Work in alcohol and other drugs context
• Provide services with co-existing needs
• The benefits of self-advocacy
• Social and emotional wellbeing
• Recognise and respond to crisis
• Physical wellbeing
• Working with individuals at risk of suicide

To achieve this qualification, you must complete at least 80 hours of placement work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of units of competency.
The Certificate IV in Mental Health requires students to complete demanding academic tasks, in order to be successful with the Certificate coursework and practical placement, students are required to perform and demonstrate a number of skills in a safe manner to those they are working with, themselves, other students and staff.
By understanding the task required within the course work and practical placement students can make an informed decision whether the program is suitable prior to enrolment.

Are there specified requirements for entry into the course/qualification?: Yes
Mandatory entry requirements:
Applicants must undertake a Language, Literacy and Numeracy test and gain the expected level to be considered for this course. Applicants must also complete a Pre-Training Review and be interviewed for this course.
Other requirements are:
18years or over
Drivers licence
Clear Police, Working with Children and NDIS Worker Screening Check (required for Placement where applicable). These are industry requirements and may cost in excess of $250
Access to suitable technology (ie laptop).
Recommended entry Requirements:
Recommended by industry, Clear Police, NDIS Worker Screening Check & Working with Children Check (all at cost to student) which is in excess of $250
Suitable internet connectivity

Qualifications and Recognition - 2025
Upon successful completion of this course students will be eligible to receive the Certificate IV In Mental Health.
Work Placement - 2025
Does this course require placement?: Yes
As part of your face-to-face learning, you'll need to complete 80 hours of mandatory placement facilitated by TAFE Gippsland's Placement Coordinator. Students may need to travel in order to obtain placement due to thin markets in the NDIS (fewer psychosocial services in parts of Gippsland - East Gippsland, Bass Coast and South Gippsland).
