Diploma of Mental Health

Do you already work in the mental health industry and want to further your skills and knowledge? Then, the Diploma of Mental Health is the ideal course for you.

This course teaches you to provide services to clients with mental health issues including counselling, referral and advocacy services. You’ll learn high level specialist knowledge, skills and competencies especially in regard to laws affecting clients, the range of services available to them and issues related to mental health.

You’ll also learn how to provide self-directed recovery-oriented support for people affected by mental illness and psychiatric disability, while implementing community based programs and activities focusing on mental health, mental illness and psychiatric disability.

This is an online course and has been developed to best support people already working in the welfare sector. There is a 160-hour practical placement that must be completed to achieve this qualification, which will be carried out under the guidance of other practitioners and professionals. But the best bit is that online classes can be completed at a time that suits you, which means your learning and development is completely in your hands!

And when you finish this course, you’ll be qualified to work in a range of contexts, including community based non-government organisations, home based outreach, centre-based programs, respite care, residential services, rehabilitation programs, clinical settings or supporting people in employment.

You might also like to take your career further by studying a Diploma of Community Services, or a Diploma in Alcohol and Other Drugs. Both of these courses will help further your skills and enhance your employment opportunities down the track – and we’ll be on hand to help with the decision-making process when you’re ready.

Mandatory entry requirements

Applicants must complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy test as well as a Pre-Training Review to determine whether they are suitable for this course. Applicants then must undertake an interview and also meet the below requirements:

  • Year 11 pass or mature age
  • Clear Police and Working with Children Check

Recommended entry requirements

  • Access to suitable technology.
  • Capable to advanced level computer skills.
