CHC30121 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care

Mandatory entry requirements:

Students must obtain a clear police check and working with children's check to be eligible to complete the placement hours required. Students must have access to a laptop with camera and microphone to be able to participate in the online Collaborate sessions that will be run throughout the course.


Recommended entry requirements:

Recommendation is that students should be a minimum 17 years of age to undertake the course.
It is recommended that students have good digital literacy skills and be confident using the Microsoft Office suite.

Some workplaces may require students  to have three COVID-19 vaccinations  as per their own centre requirements.


Limitations to entry:

Inherent requirements for Early Childhood

  • Physical activities: The work is likely to require a certain amount of physical activity, such as:
  • Standing - often for long periods of time
  • Sitting - down at a child's level
  • Bending - lifting and setting up play areas, changing nappies, making cots
  • Walking - supervising children in both the indoor and outdoor environments
  • Heavy lifting (>15kg) - sometimes lifting children or moving furniture
  • Providing a child safe environment, (being able to move quickly if a child is in danger)
  • Providing basic physical and emotional care for students (assisting with toileting and nappy changes/managing behaviour
  • Supervision of indoor and outdoor environment
  • Lifting of children, nappy changes etc.
  • Set up and put away materials both indoor and outdoor where required
  • Standing for long periods of time, being able to get down to a child’s level and engage in activities which may be at a table or floor level

Inherent Requirements

Inherent Requirements are the components of a course or unit that demonstrates student ability, knowledge and skills in order to achieve the stated learning outcomes of the course or unit. In order for students to be deemed competent within a course or unit Inherent Requirements must be met by all students.

Where students may require reasonable adjustments to a course or unit as a result of disability or other impacts on study these actions must not undermine the academic integrity of the course, unit or learning outcome. Prospective students of the Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care are required to review the following Inherent Requirements prior to proceeding with enrolment to ensure you are aware of any difficulties you may have to meet these requirements.

Physical Stamina

Student has the ability to stand for long periods of time, complete shifts of physical work 8 hours physically manage a part time class load (2 days per week) and have the physical stamina to complete placement.

What is expected of student:

  • The ability to stand with only short breaks for the duration of 8 hour period.
  • The ability to walk for extended periods as required for a placement shift.
  • The ability to safely bend and lift small children (maximum weight 20 kg).
  • The ability to safely move from standing to sitting on floor and back up again multiple times throughout a day.
  • Maintain concentration levels in order to complete practical tasks and care at the high level required.
  • Complete multiple physical and mental tasks over the period of a shift with the stamina to provide safe care to children including personal care.

Strength and mobility

Student must be able to perform gross motor skills such as lifting, carrying, pushing, standing, twisting and bending. And fine motor precise hand movements in order to provide care.

What is expected of student:

Gross Motor

  • The ability to lift safety at least 20kg of weight from floor.
  • Stable physical mobility in order to safety lift and carry equipment and children while physically navigate the environment.

Fine motor skills

  • The ability to undertake precise hand movements such pinching, grasping to provide care to small children.
  • Attending to personal care requirements toileting and washing.

Communication (verbal / non-verbal)

Student has the ability to interact with fellow students, staff and children in a practical setting in English in order to provide safe delivery of care and fulfil course requirements.

What is expected of student:

  • The ability to understand and respond to verbal communication.
  • Verbally communicate clear instructions and explanations.
  • The ability to respond to verbal instructions or communicate in a timely manner.

Communication (written)

Student is able to produce written materials required for the classroom and practical setting.

What is expected of student:

  • Clear, concise, accurate and time efficient writing including the ability to produce hand written notes.
  • Recording information using computer based systems (typing).
  • Writing reports and assessments for classroom based activities.
  • Digital literacy skills in order to navigate TAFE Gippsland online Learning Management System.
  • Regular access to Student hub in order to be up to date with course information including class changes.

Behaviour

Student must demonstrate knowledge of and ability to adhere to the ethical behaviour requirements in all course environments (pre enrolment, classroom based activities, practical activities and placement).

What is expected of student:

  • Demonstrate the ability to maintain confidentiality of information in the practical setting.
  • Ability to take responsibility for behaviour.
  • Act in a professional manner at all times such as behaving with responsibility, following safety guidelines to reduce risk.

All students must comply with codes, guidelines and policies regarding appropriate behaviour in the sector and TAFE Gippsland. This ensures physical, psychological, emotional and wellbeing of individual and those in care is not at risk.

Mental wellness

Due to the caring requirements and working with children, students must be mentally well enough to demonstrate stable health and behaviour in the classroom and practical setting. Mental Wellness is the ability to recognise individual abilities and respond to normal stresses of life, study and work.
Student demonstrates the ability to moderate their own behaviour with behavioural stability in order to function in a diverse and challenging classroom and practical environment.

What is expected of student:

  • Responding appropriately to constructive feedback.
  • Managing own emotions and behaviour effectively when dealing with individuals in practical and classroom setting. Especially situation which may be challenging as they involve small children.
  • Manage multiple demands.
  • Remain focused and engaged during all practical tasks to ensure safety of the child.
  • Manage personal emotions and behaviour when working with fellow students, staff and children.

Vision

Vision refers to the extent that an individual can see and interpret visual information. The wearing of glasses or contact lens that correct vision is not considered relevant to this inherent requirement.

Students are expected to have a level of vision that enables them to safely complete all practical and administrative tasks associated with the Early Childhood environment.

What is expected of student:

  • The ability to read handwritten and information in reduced size fonts.
  • Sufficient vision to assist, supervise and navigate the environment with children which will include objects on floor.
