About this course
Looking for a practical and supportive alternative for completing Years 11 and 12?
The Victorian Certificate of Education Vocational Major (VCE VM) is a two-year, applied learning program within the VCE. It is designed for students who learn best by connecting their studies to real-life situations, practical activities, vocational training and the world of work.
Delivered face-to-face at TAFE Gippsland’s Bairnsdale and Morwell campuses, the program includes:
• VCE VM Literacy
• VCE VM Numeracy
• VCE VM Personal Development Skills
• VCE VM Work Related Skills
• a Certificate II or III vocational qualification
• opportunities to participate in structured workplace learning.
You will learn in a smaller, supportive environment with experienced teachers who will help you build your confidence, recognise your strengths and develop a pathway that reflects your interests and future goals.
Successful completion leads to the Victorian Certificate of Education with the Vocational Major appellation. The VCE VM can prepare you for an apprenticeship or traineeship, further study at TAFE, university through an alternative entry pathway, or employment.

The pathway available to you will depend on the entry requirements of your chosen course or employer. Throughout your studies, you will receive support to explore your options and plan your next step.

Entry Requirements
Are there specified requirements for entry into the course/qualification?: Yes
Mandatory entry requirements:
There are no formal VCAA prerequisite studies for the VCE VM.
TAFE Gippsland applicants must:
be at least 16 years of age when commencing the program;
meet applicable residency and funding requirements; and
participate in TAFE Gippsland’s application, course counselling and suitability process.
Students under 17 must provide the required exemption from school attendance before commencing.
Recommended entry Requirements:
Completion of Year 10, or an equivalent level of education, is recommended.
Applicants should have an interest in practical and applied learning and be willing to participate in classroom learning, vocational training and workplace-related activities.
Limitations to course Entry:
Applicants must reside in Victoria or have a Victorian residential address. Entry is subject to available places and confirmation through course counselling that the program is suitable for the applicant’s learning needs and pathway goals. Reasonable adjustments and required supports will be considered as part of this process.

Qualifications and Recognition - 2027
Upon satisfactory completion, students will receive the Victorian Certificate of Education with the appellation of ‘Vocational Major’ and a Statement of Results. Students who successfully complete their VET qualification will also receive the relevant Certificate II or III.
Work Placement - 2027
Does this course require placement?: Yes
Students are strongly encouraged to attend work placement one day a week throughout the duration of the course. Organisation of this placement can be discussed on interview.
Elective SWL Unit, minimum 80 placement hours.
VDSS - requirement for placement dependant on VET certificate chosen.
