About this course
Want to undertake our Certificate III Hairdressing as an apprentice?
The apprenticeship pathway requires you to be employed as an apprentice hairdresser in a registered hairdressing salon.
As an apprentice, you'll have multiple training arrangements to choose from including single day release, block release or workplace training.
Day release training is available at Bairnsdale, Leongatha, Port of Sale and Traralgon campuses. You'll need to attend campus one day per week for 36 weeks each year.
Block release training is available at our Bairnsdale and Traralgon campuses and you're required to attend four days per week every four weeks for a block of study.
Workplace training is also available if you wish to learn on the job within your salon and have a TAFE assessor come to you.
Start your career in the creative and rewarding hairdressing industry. Our Certificate III in Hairdressing will give you the skills and knowledge to work as a qualified hairdresser or senior stylist in a salon, or build your own hairdressing business.
You will develop skills in cutting, colouring and finishing techniques for male and female clients, as well as client consultation, communication, client care and workplace practices.
Your learning will be supported by highly regarded Skin Deep Learning resources, providing you with current, industry-relevant content and a strong foundation for your career in hairdressing.
Career Opportunities
Career opportunities include working as a qualified hairdresser or stylist in a salon, barbershop or other personal services business. You can also work independently and build your own client base, or pursue opportunities in cruise ships, film and television, events and fashion.
Opportunities for Further Study
SHB40216 Certificate IV in Hairdressing, SHB50216 Diploma of Salon Management or graduates may choose to enhance their skillset and complete SHB30316 Certificate III in Barbering
Skills or Knowledge gained
Throughout the course, you will develop a broad range of practical hairdressing skills, including cutting, colouring, highlighting, chemical straightening and blow waving. You will also learn how to assess and care for hair and scalp conditions, create braids and up-styles, and provide excellent customer service.

Mandatory entry requirements:
Applicants are required to have an appropriate level of language, literacy and numeracy skills, which will be evaluated prior to course intake. Pre Training Review and Interview will be required prior to enrolment.
TAFE Gippsland offers a pathway from SHB20216 Certificate II in Salon Assistant into the Certificate III in Hairdressing. Completing the Certificate II provides students with a strong foundation in hairdressing skills and prepares them for the practical requirements of the Certificate III.
The Certificate II is a Free TAFE course, helping students reduce the cost of completing their hairdressing qualification. Eligible units completed through the Certificate II can also be credited towards the Certificate III, meaning the pathway does not add additional time to completing the qualification.

Our workplace delivery model for the Certificate III Hairdressing (Apprenticeship) means you can learn on the job and we'll come to you!
So, if you're already employed as an apprentice hairdresser in a registered hairdressing salon, read on. This qualification is for you!
This 100% workplace delivery model allows you to be mentored by senior staff within your salon while undertaking your hairdressing studies via our online platform. You will be guided by our workplace teacher who will visit you within your workplace throughout the year, along with regular phone/zoom calls to ensure you are progressing through your required learning and assessments.
