Unlock your potential in hairdressing!
Delivered two days per week over a 20-week period, this course will teach you essential salon skills, give you confidence interacting with clients and pave the way for exciting career opportunities in the hairdressing industry.
If you’re ready to hack into hairdressing, come and study with us and be taught by some of the best in the industry.
With a focus on high-quality customer service skills and basic hairdressing tasks including shampoo services, hair braiding, blow waving and basic hair colour application, this course is designed to give you hands-on experience working with real clients in our simulated training salons.

Career Opportunities
This qualification is designed to equip learners with the skills required to enter the hairdressing industry as a salon assistant.
Salon Assistants assist senior hairdressers with applying hair colour product, performing basic blow waves, shampooing clients, setting up workspaces, carrying out reception duties, scheduling clients, communicating and interacting with staff and clients to ensure a positive and safe salon environment.
This course sets students up well to progress to Certificate III in Hairdressing or to secure an apprenticeship leading to qualification as a hairdresser.

TAFE Gippsland offers higher level qualifications from the SHB Training Package including Certificate III’s in both Hair and Beauty streams.

Skills or Knowledge gained
You will gain skills and knowledge to work as a salon assistant including but not limited to:
- Salon communication
- Basic blow waving and drying of hair
- Braiding of hair
- Shampoo and basin services for clients
- Reception duties
- Interacting with and providing service to clients
- Product and service knowledge within the hairdressing industry.

Mandatory entry requirements:
If aged between 16 and 17 applicants must have a part-time job with a minimum of 12 hours per week to obtain their school exit form.
