Course Overview

Learn basic industry‑specific skills and knowledge to support transition into an apprenticeship in the bricklaying industry. Students learn techniques required when working with bricks and masonry blocks through a range of practical tasks.

The program also develops workplace communication, teamwork, planning, organisational skills and self‑management to support employment outcomes and further training in the construction industry.

Entry Requirements

Literacy and numeracy

Students are expected to demonstrate literacy and numeracy skills appropriate to a VET Certificate II program.

This includes:

  • Reading and understanding written instructions
  • Completing short written responses
  • Applying basic numeracy skills for measurements and calculations

This typically aligns to a Strong Reading, Writing and Numeracy result (for example, Year 9 NAPLAN or an equivalent school‑based assessment).

Physical capacity and mobility

This program includes hands‑on practical activities in a construction workshop or simulated work environment.

Students should be able to:

  • Stand for extended periods
  • Safely lift, carry and position materials
  • Use hand and power tools safely
  • Move around work areas including working at ground level and on low platforms
  • Participate safely in bricklaying and masonry‑related practical tasks
Complete the training product

To successfully complete the program, students must participate in both classroom‑based learning and practical workshop activities.

Assessment requirements may include:

  • Multiple‑choice quizzes
  • Short‑answer written responses to prompts or workplace scenarios
  • Problem‑solving tasks related to measurements, plans and basic calculations
  • Practical demonstrations of skills, including:
    • Handling bricklaying tools and equipment
    • Applying basic bricklaying techniques
    • Applying masonry blockwork techniques
  • Demonstrating selected practical skills on more than one occasion to confirm competency
  • Ongoing compliance with workplace health and safety requirements
