Course Overview

Prep for your plumbing apprenticeship with this Certificate II in Plumbing (Pre-apprenticeship).

The course will give you the skills and knowledge for entry into an apprenticeship (Certificate III in Plumbing) in one of the various sectors of the plumbing industry.

You'll learn basic plumbing skills and knowledge including:

  • Working safely as part of a team
  • Measuring and calculating
  • Using basic industry terminology to communicate effectively
  • Reading plans and specifications
  • Selecting and using plumbing tools, equipment and materials
  • Producing simple technical drawings
  • Using basic welding equipment
  • Using plumbing pipes, fittings and fixtures to simulate plumbing installations.

Entry Requirements

Literacy and numeracy

Students are expected to demonstrate basic literacy and numeracy skills appropriate to a VET Certificate II program. This includes reading and following instructions, completing short written responses, and applying basic numeracy skills for measurements. This typically aligns to a Strong Year 9 NAPLAN result or equivalent school assessment.

Physical capacity and mobility

This course includes practical activities in a simulated plumbing environment. Students should be able to stand for extended periods, safely lift and carry materials, digging, use hand and power tools, and move around workshop spaces including working at ground level and on low platforms, including above head work such as installing pipe systems.

Key requirements to complete the training product

To complete the program, students must participate in both classroom-based learning and practical workshop activities. Assessment may include:

  • Multiple-choice quizzes and short-answer questions
  • Written responses to prompts, scenarios or workplace examples
  • Problem-solving tasks related to measurements, plans and drawings
  • Practical demonstrations of plumbing skills, including safe tool use
  • Demonstration of selected practical skills on multiple occasions to confirm competency

Clothing and Equipment

  • Student must supply own safety boots and overalls or drill pants
  • Branded uniform shirt, safety glasses, gloves and ear protection will be supplied
  • Safety gear must be worn to all classes
  • Students must have access to a computer and Internet and we encourage them to bring their school laptop to all VDSS classes
