About this course

If you're an aspiring apprentice looking to hone your skills for a career in furniture making, our apprenticeship entry course is tailor-made for you.
This practical course will put you on the pathway to become a fully qualified cabinet maker with opportunities for employment as a tradesperson or the potential for self-employment.

Take your industry skills to the next level with this qualification, which will give you the tools to perform a range of services at trade-level in furniture making and the manufacture and installation or renovation of fitted furniture.
You’ll work alongside an industry employer, ensuring hands-on experience while pursuing your qualification. This course not only equips you with the technical skills needed for the trade but also cultivates your professional development and enhances your ability to engage with industry professionals and suppliers, all while you're immersed in the learning process. It's a pathway to a promising future in furniture making.

Skills or Knowledge gained

This course will teach you:
- Communication with clients, colleagues and others using clear and direct forms of communication whist actively listening, identifying and confirming requirements for task or job to be carried out
- Ability to understand all relevant trade and technical terms, symbols, abbreviations and language, working as part of a team, providing assistance and encouragement to other team members, utilising the specialist skills that are a part of the team and using these strengths to the best of their abilities
- Ability to ensure that equipment is checked regularly and up to date meeting site and job requirements and where applicable hazards are reported and documented
- All the trade skills required to become a qualified cabinetmaker including safe operation and correct use of hand tools, power tools and static machinery related to the cabinetmaking industry
- Basic programming and operation of CNC machines
- Project based furniture manufacture.
Other skills and knowledge required to perform a range of skills at trade-level for those working in furniture making and those involved in the manufacture and installation of fitted furniture typically in a kitchen, bathroom and related context. Installation skills may also be applied to new or renovation work.

Mandatory entry requirements:

To be enrolled in this qualification each student must have a current employer at the time of enrolment due to the course being for apprentices only. Each apprentice will also be signed by an Apprenticeship Centre of choosing by the employer and have a training contract that states the relationship between the employer, apprentice and RTO. Once the training contract has been released an apprentice Sign up and Induction is completed within 5 working days and the apprentice commences in class once the enrolment has been confirmed

Recommended entry Requirements:

Students are required to have a passion for the Industry and are required to have a current employer as this is an apprenticeship only course.

Limitations to course Entry:

For each Learner enrolling in a vocational qualification, regardless of eligible or ineligible status under the Victorian Training Guarantee, TAFE Gippsland will conduct a Pre-Training Review of current competencies (including literacy and numeracy skills) prior to commencement in training.
