Delivered across two days a week at both Morwell campus and Bairnsdale campus, our practical Certificate III in Conservation and Ecosystem Management will give you specialist training in biodiversity conservation, restoration ecology, taking assessments of natural environments and so much more.

You’ll learn the knowledge and skills to work in increasingly important sectors, such as fauna habitat management, mine site rehabilitation, bushland fire management and ecological restoration. Wherever your passion lies, you’ll can play your part in conserving our planet in a variety of roles.

Skills or Knowledge gained

This course involves hands on learning, both outdoor and indoor and enables students to develop and practice skills including teamwork, work under broad direction and take responsibility for their own work and use discretion and judgement in the selection and use of available resources.
You will gain knowledge and skills in:
- Preparation, use and transport of chemicals
- Identifying native and introduced flora and control weeds
- Methods for controlling pest animals
- Sampling and testing of water
- Site inspections and navigation skills
- Revegetation techniques and maintaining natural areas
- Using photography for monitoring and recording information, safe machinery operations.

Entry Requirements

Are there specified requirements for entry into the course/qualification?: No

Mandatory entry requirements:

Profile / Fulltime Trainee Students: Minimum age of 17 years (this is not a training package requirement). Profile students in Victoria must be 17 years of age or older and not enrolled at secondary school to be eligible to enrol in this qualification.
School Based Apprentice / Trainee (SBAT): Must be 15 years or older to undertake a SBAT. SBATs must be 16 years of age or older to be operate machinery such as Tractors, according to manufacturer specifications.
Unit selection: Some units of competency e.g. such as the 4 wheel dive operations require students to be 18 years of age or older and hold a current manual vehicle licence.

Recommended entry Requirements:

This qualification may be accessed by direct entry, often as a part time or full time traineeship, including School Based Trainee.
Applicants wishing to undertake the qualification are required to complete a full Language, Literacy & Numeracy assessment, as well as a Pre training Review.
Applicants are also required to complete a interview with one of the trainers before enrolment can proceed into this course.
We recommend that applicants should have completed a Certificate II CEM or equivalent qualification or have a minimum of 1 year experience working in the CEM sector. Past experience in industry or related businesses a would be an advantage but not essential.

Limitations to course Entry:

Students must have access to a reliable internet connection.
Students must have access to a computer or tablet that will support course work to be completed in our Learning Management System Moodle. We recommend that this also includes a headset (integrated microphone and earphones).
Students intending to work within the CEM industry must be physically fit, this includes the ability to bend and lift. Students must be able to spend considerable time on their feet throughout their working day.

About this course

Designed for trainee cohorts, our Certificate III in Conservation and Ecosystem Management also includes OHS and ecological and cultural site inspection skills and industry qualifications and licences including a chemical skill set course and four-wheel driving course.
Also designed to meet workplace requirements for Taungurong Land & Water Council and Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation (GLaWAC) trainees and non-apprentice staff, this two-year blended course provides training in areas such as plant identification (indigenous cultural plants and uses), native fauna field identification skills, natural area restoration works, pest animal control techniques, pest plant control methods.
