About this course
Prepare yourself to work as education support workers in a primary or secondary school setting, assisting teachers in supporting the learning of students, often those requiring additional support and/or with a disability or additional learning needs in the classroom.
With a combination of online study, face-to-face workshop and work placement in a primary or secondary school setting, this course requires at least 100 hours of work placement.
You'll need:
- A laptop with a camera to bring to class
- Access to the internet at home for online study
- Digital literacy skills to enable them to work independently with our online platform (Moodle)
- Literacy skills to independently access course readings and other learning materials
- Microsoft Office 365 skills.

Our Certificate IV in School Based Education Support will give you the skills to assist teachers to support the learning of students in the classroom and work with students requiring additional support and/or with a disability or additional learning needs.
As part of this qualification, you'll need to have completed a total of least 100 hours of work in a classroom environment catering to primary or secondary school students, within at least one school in Australia as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of units of competency.

This course will equip you with the skills to work with teachers, primary and secondary school students, their families and other professionals in a school setting.
You will develop the skills and knowledge to enable them to provide enriching, engaging, and meaningful learning experiences and a supportive learning environment for primary and secondary school students. You'll develop knowledge in childhood development, literacy and numeracy development, behaviour management strategies, policy and legislation and curriculum implementation.
Through both the classroom and practical placements you will have the opportunity to set up learning experiences, become familiar with relevant policy and procedures and learn how to provide a safe learning and work environment.
Areas of knowledge that are covered in the course include:
* Legislation and policy
* Health and safety
* Mandatory reporting
* Family and culture
* Child development and behavior
* Setting up learning experiences
*Literacy and numeracy development
* Working effectively with colleagues, students and families
* Documenting student learning and taking observations
* Roles and responsibilities for an education support worker.
Expectations for the role of a Certificate III trained education support worker in the workplace include the following foundation employability skills:
* Oral communication
* Problem-solving
* Reading and writing skills
* Self-management
* Planning and organisational
* Technology
* Initiative and enterprise.
Entry Requirements
Are there specified requirements for entry into the course/qualification?: Yes
Mandatory entry requirements:
Students must obtain a clear National Police Check and Working With Children Check to be able to complete the workplace component of this course.
Students must have a laptop with a camera and microphone (for online workshops if needed).
Students will complete a pre-training review (PTR), including language, literacy, and numeracy assessment, phone interview, and a face-to-face interview.
To attend placement or be in the workplace, students are required to have COVID-19 vaccinations as determined by the State Government on public health recommendations.
Recommended entry Requirements:
Basic digital literacy skills, including experience using Microsoft Office 365.
Limitations to course Entry:
Inherent requirements for this course:
* This course has a mandatory workplace component in a school setting to complete practical assessments. The following are the inherent requirements for education support workers' roles and responsibilities:
* Providing a child-safe environment (being able to move quickly if a child is in danger)
* Providing basic physical and emotional care for students (assisting with toileting, managing student behavior, supporting children with disabilities which may include lifting, administration of medication, and required treatments)
* Supervision in the playground, and on camps, excursions, and sporting activities and events
* Provide support for teaching teach (may include setting up activities, supervision of small or large group activities)
* Set up and put away learning materials and resources both indoors and outside where required
* Standing for long periods of time, being able to get down to a child's level and engage in activities which may be at a table of floor level

Are you interested in enhancing your skills and knowledge to better assist teachers in facilitating the learning of students, particularly those who require additional support due to disabilities or other learning needs in the classroom?
The Certificate IV in School-Based Education Support is designed to equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge to support students in primary and secondary school settings.
To qualify for workplace-based enrolment in the Certificate IV in School-Based Education Support, you must be employed for a minimum of 15 hours per week as an Education Support Worker in a primary or secondary school.
