Gain practical skills in safe chainsaw operation and maintenance with our Operate and Maintain Chainsaw course. This nationally recognised training is designed for those working with chainsaws in professional or personal settings. The course will help to improve safety, efficiency, and compliance while minimising risks and extending equipment life.
This hands-on course covers the key aspects of chainsaw use, operation, and care. Over two days (8.30am-4.00pm), participants will learn:
- Chainsaw Fundamentals: Components, safety features, chain brake operation, starting methods, and control techniques.
- Cutting Techniques: Undercutting, top cutting, plunge cutting, vertical and horizontal cuts, and crosscutting fallen timber using compression and tension methods.
- Maintenance Skills: Powerhead, guide bar, saw chain, drive sprocket, and carburettor maintenance, including chain sharpening.
- Safety and Compliance: Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) procedures, PPE requirements, hazard identification and control, shut-down processes, worksite communication, and environmental considerations.
Combining theory with practical exercises, the course prepares you to apply safe practices, manage equipment faults, assess risks, and handle emergencies effectively. It's a solid foundation for responsible chainsaw handling in various environments.
This course is appropriate for a range of participants, including:
- Council operators and local government staff.
- Emergency services personnel (e.g., SES, CFA).
- Farm or home owners.
- Recreational camping and 4WD users.
- Individuals in power, rail, forestry, landscaping, agriculture, horticulture, arboriculture, conservation land management, tree contracting, parks management, ecology, and firewood collection.

Course and Entry Requirements
Mandatory entry requirements:
There are no prerequisite units, or licensing, legislative, or certification requirements for this unit of competency.
This course involves operating a chainsaw (typically weighing 4-7 kg), trimming branches, cutting tree sections, moving or stabilising felled trees, clearing debris, and working in varied outdoor environments and bush settings, which can require bending, lifting, standing for extended periods, and manual dexterity. Students/workers must have the physical capacity to complete these practical components of the course.
Students must be able to speak clear English, and be able to demonstrate basic reading and writing skills to recognise workplace health and safety signs and complete basic prestart checklists or reports if required.
Traineeships/Pre Apprenticeships:
Parental consent is required for students aged between 16 and 18 years of age. Students must have the physical capability to handle the tool safely (e.g., strength for a 4-7kg chainsaw, dexterity), as assessed by the trainer and assessor. The student must also have been deemed eligible to undertake the course, perform activities under strict supervision and comply with all PPE requirement's at all times.
Whilst undertaking this course;
- individual must not be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- individual must not be taking any medication (prescribed or otherwise) that may impair judgement.
Recommended entry requirements:
Trainers/assessors may advise against participation if you have conditions affecting mobility, strength, or endurance.
