Course Overview

SEAMEC offers a full day course for commercial skippers who intend to cross any bar to the ocean and wish to return in a safe manner.  This course also forms the pre-requisite training for commercial operators wishing to gain a Local Knowledge Endorsement LK8 for the Lakes Entrance Bar – Passenger Carrying vessels.

Gain confidence in your ability to understand and negotiate any ocean access bar. The course comprises classroom theory, practical on-water demonstrations and introduces interpretation of charts, weather maps, cloud formations and assessment of conditions at a bar or ocean entrance.

  • How to recognise signage and understand natural phenomena
  • Safe bar crossing protocols
  • The importance of correct usage of safety equipment
  • Procedures for safe bar crossings
  • Boat handling skills

Specialist Course Information

Recreational operators will not operate the training vessel on the Bar, however they will accompany the trainer in the vessel while safe bar crossing is demonstrated.

Professional operators will be expected to take control of the vessel under the direct supervision of the trainer and demonstrate safe bar crossings in a 1-on-1 format.
