Course Overview

Learn the basic skills in construction including workplace health and safety, safe use of hand and power tools, and practical construction tasks. Students complete hands-on projects such as basic sub floors and wall frames, and develop communication, teamwork, planning and self-management skills.

This program prepares students for entry into a Certificate III Carpentry apprenticeship or further training.

Entry Requirements

Literacy and numeracy

Students are expected to demonstrate basic literacy and numeracy skills appropriate to a VET Certificate II program. This includes reading and following instructions, completing short written responses, and applying basic numeracy skills for measurements. This typically aligns to a Strong Year 9 NAPLAN result or equivalent school assessment.

Physical capacity and mobility

This course includes practical activities in a simulated construction environment. Students should be able to stand for extended periods, safely lift and carry materials, use hand and power tools, and move around workshop spaces including working at ground level and on low platforms.

Complete the training product

To complete the program, students must participate in both classroom-based learning and practical workshop activities. Assessment may include:

  • Multiple-choice quizzes and short-answer questions
  • Written responses to prompts, scenarios or workplace examples
  • Problem-solving tasks related to measurements, plans and drawings
  • Practical demonstrations of construction skills, including safe tool use
  • Demonstration of selected practical skills on multiple occasions to confirm competency
