Bryanna Paynter-Harvie

Enrolling in a course is quite a daunting task for most students, especially when you think you lack confidence in social situations.

That was something Bryanna Paynter-Harvie was very keen to overcome. In doing so she has quite literally kick-started her career, not only in her new study venture. But also by being selected as a finalist for the Victorian Learn Local Young Pre-accredited Learner Award for the 2020 Victorian Learn Local Awards.

This award program recognises the outstanding achievements of individuals, programs and training providers within the Learn Local education and training sector and will be presented virtually. Bryanna is one of three finalists for her category after being nominated by Shelby Kent from the Skills and Jobs Centre.

“I am very shocked and overwhelmed, in a good way. I feel very honoured,” Bryanna said.

Bryanna’s learning journey started by attending the Noweyung Kick Start Your Career in Health at Bairnsdale Regional Health Service. This program provides learners with job-ready skills and genuine experience, in their nominated health field, throughout a six-week course.

“The program showed me just how capable I really am, both socially and academically,” Bryanna said.

“I went from being a quiet learner, to showing my confidence and enthusiasm.”

During the program, Bryanna attended a resume writing workshop and information session delivered by the Skills and Jobs Centre from TAFE Gippsland’s Bairnsdale Campus. Skills and Jobs Advisor, Shelby Kent, facilitated the workshop.

“Bry was quite reserved at the resume writing workshop. She came across as quiet but willing to take on any suggestions,” Shelby said.

Bryanna amazed her trainers on the final day of the program by speaking at a public forum about the skills learned and personal growth experience she had with the program. A huge step for someone who came into the program as a shy student.

“I attended their last day where students ran the session. Bry stood out from the crowd on this day. She was confident, and almost seemed to be the ‘MC’. Completely the opposite from my initial experience with her,” Shelby said.

“I was wowed to say the least.”

Following her fantastic experience in the education space, Bryanna has commenced a Certificate IV in Education Support as a pathway into primary school teaching.

“I am really enjoying my course and this is the first step to my long term goal of becoming a teacher,” beamed Bryanna.
