At just 21, Bayley Croucher is already carving out a rewarding future in healthcare. Born and raised in Bairnsdale, he’s on track to complete his Diploma of Nursing at TAFE Gippsland—and he’s just getting started.

Next stop? A well-earned break in New Zealand. Then it’s on to university, thanks to TAFE Gippsland’s pathway partnership with Federation University Australia.

“My plan after finishing the diploma is to apply for the Bachelor of Nursing at Federation Uni,” Bayley said.

“But first, I’m heading over to New Zealand for a week—just to take a breather!”

Why nursing?

Like many young Aussies, Bayley spent time after school working and gaining life experience.

“I moved to Melbourne for a year to build some independence and worked in disability and high care support. I wanted to expand my skills, but I didn’t have any certificates,” he said.

“When I found out TAFE Gippsland offered Free TAFE in nursing, I didn’t hesitate. I moved back home and enrolled. It was the best decision I ever made.”

From footy fields to mock up wards

Bayley says the transition from high school at Bairnsdale Secondary College to tertiary study was challenging—but incredibly rewarding.

“In school, if it wasn’t sport or woodwork, I wasn’t interested,” he said.

“But I made a promise to myself before I started: don’t be afraid to ask for help and always stay on top of assessments.”

The 18-month diploma wasn’t easy, but Bayley credits his success to good time management and the support of his teachers.

“This course isn’t handed to you on a silver platter—you have to work for it. But there’s so much support available. The teachers, the facilities, the friendships—it’s been amazing.”

What’s next?

Bayley hopes to work locally while studying for his degree, with an eye on a career in surgical nursing.

“I’d love to work at BRHS or anywhere I can apply my skills while studying,” he said.

“Long-term, I want to become a Registered Nurse and I’m really interested in the surgical side of nursing. But I’m open to all opportunities—I just want to help people and grow in the field.”
