Quinn Jacobs was proud to receive the Apprentice of the Year gong at the AHA Victoria Awards.

Quinn, a proud Maffra local, is part of our Level 3 Apprenticeship Program and has been training at the renowned Tinamba Hotel—a long-time industry partner of TAFE Gippsland. From humble beginnings in the dish pit to his recent promotion to sous chef, Quinn’s journey is proof that great things happen when talent meets opportunity and great mentorship.

What does Quinn love most about his apprenticeship?

“The highlight for me is the freedom Head Chef Rocco and I have to experiment and create exciting new dishes with the amazing local ingredients we have right here in Gippsland,” Quinn said.

“It would be amazing though to one day own my own small fine dining restaurant, or a small little cafe in a country town. I don’t have a set plan for when I finish my apprenticeship, but there are so many amazing opportunities available in this industry that can take you anywhere and everywhere!”

After stepping in as Quinn’s trainer at the end of 2024, culinary teacher Kiri Iddon says one thing stands out above all: his flair in the kitchen.

“It’s his creative approach to flavour pairings and his genuine passion for working with local produce,” Kiri said. “He’s truly thriving in an environment that lets him do what he does best—craft unforgettable food experiences for their customers.”

While we’re so excited for Quinn and see where his journey takes him next, the good news doesn’t stop there! The Tinamba Hotel also took home the title of Regional Pub Restaurant of the Year, celebrating their dedication to excellence and the vibrant flavours of Gippsland’s local produce.

A huge congratulations to Quinn, Tinamba Hotel and everyone who supports and mentors our apprentices. This is what Gippsland talent looks like!
