Real-world experience with real local impact. That’s what we love at TAFE Gippsland.

Our VET Delivered to Secondary Schools (VDSS) students studying Certificate II in Conservation and Ecosystem Management have been hard at work, bringing colour, care and conservation to the Warragul campus.

And in true Gippsland style, they did it all on one of the coldest, wettest days of the term.

VDSS students working on transforming a Warragul garden space

Armed with enthusiasm, gardening tools and plenty of layers, 14 students rolled up their sleeves to transform two tired garden beds into what will soon become vibrant, thriving native spaces.

The entire project was student-led—from selecting hardy native plants and mapping out planting zones, to choosing the right tree guards and planning for mulch and watering needs. Every detail was carefully considered in class before being brought to life on the ground.

With teachers Tammy Rogers and Marty Sinnema right there beside them, the students dug deep, planting and spreading over four square metres of mulch. Despite the chill, the day was full of energy, teamwork and laughter.

Head of Department Lou Underhill said the transformation is already making an impact.

“Warragul staff have commented on how much the new gardens have lifted the space,” Lou said.

“A huge thank you to our students and educators for their energy, effort and great attitudes—this is something the whole campus will enjoy for years to come.”

It’s hands-on learning with a lasting legacy. Well done to everyone involved!
