At TAFE Gippsland, we believe in the power of education to change lives. Thanks to targeted training initiatives, students from all walks of life are gaining the skills, support and confidence they need to re-enter the workforce and thrive.
Two of our most impactful programs—Certificate II in Construction Pathways and Certificate II in Salon Assistant—have been made possible through the Victorian Government’s Early School Leavers grant. These programs are specifically designed to support students who have faced barriers to education or employment, offering them practical training in high-demand industries.
Recently, students enrolled in the Certificate II in Construction Pathways at our Yallourn campus reached an important milestone, successfully completing their Construction Induction Card (White Card). This credential allows them to safely and legally work on construction sites, boosting their employability and setting them up for real-world success.
Painting and Decorating educator Sam Reid, who has supported the cohort throughout their journey, says it’s been a rewarding experience.
“We’ve had nine students from a variety of backgrounds and age groups, each bringing their own interests and strengths to the course,” Sam said.
“A standout moment was a collaborative projection mural on the classroom wall—every student made their mark and took pride in the result. We were also incredibly well supported by our LLN teachers, who worked alongside us every step of the way.”
Meanwhile, students in our Certificate II in Salon Assistant program are also building confidence and industry-ready skills as part of TAFE Gippsland’s broader strategy to deliver inclusive, targeted training for learners experiencing intersectional disadvantage.
Linda Hamilton, TAFE Gippsland’s Specialist Advisor for Disadvantaged Learners, says these programs are about more than qualifications—they’re about creating lasting change.
“At the core of my work is a commitment to student success—re-engaging learners, sparking their curiosity, helping them imagine positive futures and meeting both their educational and emotional needs,” Linda said.
“These students are not just completing qualifications—they’re becoming skilled, confident, and employable members of our communities.”
These programs are a testament to the power of inclusive, hands-on learning, and the dedication of our staff to support every student—no matter their starting point—to succeed.
