We know that for many of our students, the rising cost of living is hitting hard right now. From fuel and groceries to bills and everyday expenses, it’s adding up and it’s not always easy to manage alongside study.

Over the past few months, we’ve seen a 52% increase in students experiencing financial strain, along with a significant rise in scholarship applications. If things are feeling tight, please know this: you’re not alone, and support is available.

At TAFE Gippsland, we’re here to help you stay on track with your studies while navigating these challenges. Here are some practical ways to ease the pressure and access support.

Talk it through with someone who gets it

Our Student Wellbeing Advisors are here to listen — no pressure, no judgement. Sometimes, just having a conversation can help you feel more in control and open up new options.

Reach out early (not just at crisis point)

If things are starting to feel tight, that’s the time to connect. Whether it’s your educator, Student Services, or someone you trust, reaching out early gives us more ways to support you before things escalate.

Get connected to practical support

We can help link you with local community services offering food relief, bill assistance, and even fuel support. Accessing these services can help free up some breathing room in your budget.

You can also explore local support options through Ask Izzy or connect with us and we’ll help coordinate support that suits your situation.

Access short-term help if you’re stuck

Student Services have a limited number of one-off fuel vouchers available for students doing it tough. While they’re not a long-term solution, they can provide some immediate relief when you need it most.

Ask about flexibility

If travel or costs are making it harder to attend, talk to your educator or support team. There may be flexible options available to help you continue your studies without falling behind. We want to see you succeed — and celebrate with you at graduation.

Use campus spaces to save on costs

If you’re struggling with internet access, heating, or finding a quiet place to study, our campuses are here for you. You’ll find free internet, welcoming spaces, and support when you need it.

If you’re local, drop into one of our Learning Hubs in Morwell, Yallourn, Warragul or Bairnsdale. Have a chat, grab a cuppa, and connect with a Learning Hubs Advisor who can point you toward the right support. Find your closest campus.

Check what you’re already entitled to

You might be eligible for concessions or financial assistance you’re not currently accessing. One example is the Utility Relief Grant Scheme, which can help with essential service bills. Our team can help you explore what’s available.

Explore cheaper travel options or share the journey

The Victorian Government has announced free public transport across the state this April to help ease cost-of-living pressures.

If you’re comfortable, consider carpooling with classmates — many students travel similar routes, and sharing the journey can significantly reduce costs (and make the commute more enjoyable).

We’ll also be trialling a shuttle bus from Morwell and Yallourn train stations to our campuses. If this would help you, reach out to Student Support Services.

Look out for your mates — ask “R U OK?”

Financial stress can take a toll, and sometimes the people around us are doing it tough too. Checking in with a simple “Are you OK?” can make a real difference.

The R U OK? framework is a great guide:

  • Ask
  • Listen
  • Encourage action
  • Check in

You don’t need to have all the answers — just being there matters. Learn more.

Stay connected

When money is tight, it can be tempting to pull back — but staying connected to your classmates, teachers, and campus community can make a big difference.

If you’d prefer independent support, services like Lifeline offer free, confidential support via phone, text or webchat, 24/7.

We’re here for you

Whatever you’re facing, you don’t have to navigate it alone. Whether it’s a quick chat, practical support, or ongoing guidance, TAFE Gippsland is here to help you through.

If you’re feeling the pressure, reach out. We’re ready when you are.
