For Lucia Gauci, graduating from two TAFE Gippsland Koorie Studies courses in 2026 was more than an achievement. It was the beginning of a new direction, with plans to keep studying and pursue a career in social work.

Having grown up in Melbourne before eventually settling in Traralgon with her family, Lucia was ready to try something different. With a love of sport and a desire to learn new skills, she enrolled at TAFE Gippsland to explore her options.

“I enrolled at TAFE to get more skills and knowledge and find a career pathway that suited me,” Lucia said.

What followed was a positive experience that gave her the confidence to keep going.

“It was a truly positive experience with amazing staff and outstanding support. Alan Solomon is the best teacher I’ve ever had and I’ve been to a lot of schools!”

Lucia’s commitment to her studies saw her travel from Rosedale to Bairnsdale for classes, then continue her learning across Morwell and Warragul to complete both qualifications.

With encouragement from her family and support from TAFE Gippsland staff, Lucia graduated with a Certificate II in Mumgu-dhal tyama-tiyt community, connection and pathways and a Certificate II in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Cultural Arts at TAFE Gippsland’s graduation ceremony in Traralgon.

The milestone was particularly meaningful, with Lucia becoming the first person in her family to graduate with a tertiary qualification.

“I was really proud to graduate from two courses and while I’m currently working in retail, I really want to get into the social work industry,” she said.

Lucia’s study journey is far from over. She plans to enrol in a Certificate IV in Community Services in 2027, taking another step towards her career goals.

“Everyone at TAFE was so welcoming, caring, and helpful, making the whole experience smooth, comfortable and enjoyable. I intend on enrolling in a Certificate IV in Community Services in 2027 and continuing my study journey.”

What a great example of where taking that first step can lead, with the right support, determination and a willingness to try something new.

Congratulations, Lucia! We look forward to welcoming you back to campus in 2027.
