There are no surprises when it comes to Luke Copland’s teaching philosophy: plan ahead, trust the process and take pride in your work.

“I enjoy teaching the process of building something – not just having it all done for you by machines and other people but being able to see how something is built and then formulate a logical, step-by-step approach to constructing it,” Luke said.

A Building Trades teacher at TAFE Gippsland for six years, Luke brings a diverse trade background spanning cabinet making, carpentry, furniture making, and residential and commercial building and construction. His breadth of experience helps students think beyond the task in front of them and develop practical problem-solving skills.

Recently awarded Trainer of the Year at the 2026 Master Builders Association of Victoria Awards, Luke is known for empowering students to think on their feet while maintaining high standards.

“I find that a wide range of experience can help broaden the view of the students to look beyond their current situation and come up with their own solutions,” he said.

“I also encourage them to take a sense of pride in their work and I always aim to stretch them to do more than they think they can.”
