With more than four decades in the trades, Mick Wardle knows that learning by doing is the key to student success at TAFE Gippsland.
“Most students respond better if given clear and precise instructions with a demonstration on how to achieve a good result,” Mick said.
“I like to demonstrate hands-on activities, providing feedback along the way to help them feel supported and make sure they understand what they’re trying to achieve.”
Mick began his apprenticeship in 1980. A decade later, he launched his own painting and decorating business, building it over 33 years. In 2006, he stepped into teaching part-time to pass on his expertise, before making vocational education his full-time profession in 2017. Throughout it all, he’s remained committed to continuous learning.
“We need to evolve as industry needs and expectations change,” Mick said.
“Being aligned with the Master Painters Association keeps us informed on important changes within our industry and this allows us to keep our students up to date with information, technology and product changes.”
That strong industry alignment, including connection with the Master Painters Association of Victoria, is reflected in recent student success at the Association’s awards, where Mick’s tailored training programs have helped apprentices shine.

What Mick’s students can expect
Students can expect hands-on, industry-aligned learning designed to help them achieve their goals with confidence.
The Painting & Decorating team at TAFE Gippsland also values community involvement, regularly contributing to local Gippsland projects. Students have gained real-world experience working on upgrades for the Yallourn North Football Club, Macedonian Club in Morwell and the Leongatha Theatre Company — practical opportunities that allow them to put their skills to the test while giving back to the community.
