A fundraising BBQ event held in Morwell to support two TAFE Gippsland students heading to Russia in 2020 was a major success with just on $1300.00 raised.

TAFE Gippsland apprentice chefs Darcy Nichol and Brendan Woodroffe will travel to St Petersburg, Russia in July 2020 to represent Australia at the World Chef’s Congress & Expo. Darcy, from The Royal Standard Hotel in Toora and Brendan, from Hoggett Kitchen in Warragul, are part of an Australian team joining over 5000 chefs from 110 association countries to attend the four-day event next year.

Darcy and Brendan study at the Morwell campus of TAFE Gippsland and a pop-up ‘BBQ lunch by the lake’ - held recently at TAFE Gippsland’s Waratah Training Restaurant – proved a big hit with the community.

TAFE Gippsland Culinary Studies teacher, Ms Kellie Fraser, said more than 150 community members attended, enjoying the delicious food, salads and coffee on offer.

“A huge thank you to everyone who came along and to our students for staging a very successful event.”

Ms Fraser said the good news has continued for hospitality students with 2nd year apprentice Brendan awarded another major culinary training skills title in the past week.

“We are delighted to advise that Brendan has secured a silver medal at the National AusTAFE titles in Canberra and, after his gold medal at the Victorian state titles, we are so very proud of his achievement,” Ms Fraser said.

The National Apprentice Competition was held on Wednesday 10 October with 16 apprentice chefs and culinary students representing their home state at the highest level competing against their peers.

“Brendan had to prepare, cook and serve two meals using various products and to win a silver medal shows he is an outstanding talent,” Ms Fraser said.

Ms Fraser said Brendan and fellow second year apprentice chefs are preparing an evening dinner for local residents next week to “showcase their amazing skills in a formal dinner service”.

The three-course dinner will be held at Morwell’s Waratah Training Restaurant on Tuesday 22 October from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. Bookings are recommended – call 5622 8532 to reserve your table.
