Teacher and student

Zoe Treloar’s dreams of becoming a paediatric nurse were shattered at the same time as her left shoulder. But this didn’t stop her from pursuing a career in which she could do the one thing she ultimately wanted to do, which was help children.

There are many reasons why you might be considering a career change yourself. Whether you’ve just embarked upon your vocational venture or you’re a seasoned professional, it’s not uncommon to change direction or explore new opportunities on your journey to career fulfilment.

Zoe’s story

Twenty-seven-year-old Zoe Treloar didn’t have much choice in the matter of changing her career goals. In avid pursuit of a nursing career specialising in paediatrics, Zoe’s studies came to a halt after having two shoulder reconstructions and the realisation that she was rendered physically unable to work in this field.

But that didn’t stop her from taking heed of her options and a small detour to get to where she ultimately wanted to be.

“At the start of 2021, my Mum, who is a secondary school teacher, suggested I study a Certificate III in School Based Education Support with TAFE Gippsland, so I could still achieve my goal of helping kids,” Zoe explained.

“After a little research, I decided this was the course for me as I knew I could still help kids, but in a different way.”

Throughout the 18-month course Zoe felt engaged, enlightened and excited about the fact that she was able to transfer her skills from one support field to another. She enjoyed the experience so much, she found it difficult to focus on one particular highlight.

“There wasn’t a bit of the course that wasn’t enjoyable, but if I had to choose one thing that was my favourite part, it would have to be placement at the Latrobe Valley Flexible Learning Option school,” Zoe said.

“Everyday was different and I was always kept on my toes. I got to meet some wonderful students who wanted to achieve their own goals. I enjoyed knowing what each day would provide and knowing I would have a positive effect on at least one student’s day every time I walked into the school.”

What is school based education support?

Think teacher aide in a primary or secondary school setting, integration coordinator, even school office administrator.

Education support is a rewarding career, providing assistance and support to teachers and students in a variety of educational settings, including public and private schools.

Zoe suggests you “go into everything with an open mind”.

“Don’t think about what is required for you as an education support worker,” Zoe stated.

“There is a lot more you need to do other than help students. You need to know what is within and outside your scope of practice. Also, don’t assume each topic is going to be about one thing because it will also cover multiple other things you need to remember!”

Looking back on her study experience fondly, Zoe said always felt comfortable asking staff for assistance, knowing she’d be well looked after.

“Everyone has been wonderful,” Zoe stated.

“I had to have three weeks off due to sickness and I was given a medical certificate, but I contacted my teacher straight away and kept them in the loop,” Zoe said.

“I was able to get extensions on multiple assessments, but had I not kept them in the loop, this may not have happened. So don’t feel like you’re annoying or causing grief by contacting your teacher, because they are there to help you and will do so quickly and efficiently.”

Designed so students can study and work at the same time, this flexible course will give you hands-on experience in the industry you love, allowing you to work as an integration aide, an office administrator or even a teacher’s aide, in a public, independent or specialist school, as well as enhance your career opportunities.

Available to people who currently work in the education sector, this industry-focused certificate will help you upskill and get the qualifications you need to stay in the job you love.
